About DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Megan provides standard outpatient dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) according to the gold standard treatment model including all 4 modes of treatment: skills group training, individual therapy, phone coaching, and a therapist consultation team

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a unique, specialized form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that was originally developed to treat adults who were chronically suicidal, self-injuring, and exhibiting symptoms of borderline personality disorder. DBT is officially recognized by the Cochrane Review (Stouffer et al. (2012)) as the treatment of choice for characteristics associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) including impulsivity, interpersonal problems, emotional dysregulation, self-harm, and suicidal behaviors. Over time, the application of DBT has been proven effective in treating a wide range of emotional difficulties, including depression, anxiety, substance use problems and eating disorders.

DBT balances the use of change techniques from cognitive-behavior therapy with acceptance strategies from Zen practice. Clients learn cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness skills to better identify and manage their emotions. They then practice applying those skills to better tolerate life events and improve their ability to interact effectively with others.

My clients often experience:

  • Problems with anger
  • Chaotic relationships
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Intense fears of abandonment
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Inadequate sense of self
  • Recurrent suicidal or self-injurious behavior
  • Family problems or conflicts
  • Eating disorders
  • Addiction issues
  • Anxiety or depression

As a comprehensive treatment, DBT has the following goals:

  • Decreasing life-threatening (e.g., suicidal attempts, suicidal threats, suicidal thoughts) and self-injurious behavior
  • Decreasing therapy-interfering behaviors (e.g., missing or coming late to sessions, remaining silent in sessions)
  • Decreasing quality-of-life interfering behaviors (e.g., fighting with people, substance abuse, trouble in school or work)
  • Increasing coping skills (e.g., learning to deal with conflict, learning to cope with painful emotions, improving positive self-care)

I pride myself in being a strong, motivated, intelligent individual. But I always felt as if my emotional dysregulation (due to BPD) was holding me back from being my “best” self. First Megan and I began working with DBT where I have learned many valuable skills on how to accept myself, listen and act in alignment with my values instead of the ingrained thoughts triggering intense emotions.

Once I built up my skills and a strong relationship with Megan we set out to get to the root with PTSD-DBT. This therapy was no joke and took some intense work. Megan was great along the entire process. She provided the right combination to guide me towards growth. She was there to quench all of my anxieties, supporting me through the arduous process, listening when I needed some space and finally pushing me to not quit! I am so grateful to have gone through the journey to come out a free individual, with the clarity to now heal the wounds that so heavily weighed me down. Not only do I notice an improvement, but I was able to reconnect important relationships and hear responses like “You are calmer” & “you have matured”. I will not claim to be a perfect human, but definitely a skilled, lighter, more self-confident one!

Former Client

Working with Megan as my therapist has been a wonderful experience. She is very kind and dedicated towards what she does and she truly cares to help me out in the best ways possible. Her help, guidance and suggestions have done so much for me and have helped me to turn my life around for the better and work towards getting as much as I can out of it in each and every day. Every time we meet she helps me to work on something great that will continue to increase the quality of my life and I appreciate everything her help does for me.

By working together with her she has become such a meaningful and important person to me in my life and I look forward to continuing to be able to work with her in the future and be able to take in all the help and guidance she has to bring to me going forward. She is a fantastic therapist and she definitely has so much to offer to help anyone out that may be seeking someone to help them improve or better there life. She does so much for me and I’m sure she could help anyone else out in the same way as it does for me.
